East Dorset Consultation
on
Gypsy & Travellers Sites ..........Candy's Lane
It is announced in the Community Magazine that local Councillors have made the decision to remove Candy's Lane, Corfe Mullen from their list of sites under consideration for setting up a Travellers Caravan site.
Given all the strong reasons for objecting to this proposal it is good news to hear this decison has removed Candy's Lane from such a development.

Cold Callers
This is a message concerning cold callers.
Two males in a white van sign written 'Clean A Roof' charged an elderly lady in Broadstone £188 for cleaning her guttering and repairing tiles.
A Neighbour challenged them and they reduced the cost to £110.
These males had to borrow brushes and a ladder and were clearly not professional tradesmen. They have also called in neighbouring areas.
Please do not engage cold callers to do work for you. Use professional tradesmen who can be found through your Local Neighbourhood Watch or Trading Standards.
Please report any suspicious callers immediately to Dorset Police on 999. Thank You

Warning Message from two of our Co-ordinators regarding Door to Door Sales
I just wanted to let you know that yesterday (29th June 2011) we had a door to door seller, claiming to be from Scottish Power.
He was stating that we were on the incorrect tariff which was not the cheapest and was trying to get us to sign up for a fixed rate deal.
He knew our names, but did not say which supplier we were currently with.
I have researched energy prices and I know that I am on the cheapest deal for my usage, so I consider this to be misleading claims at the minimum.
I am concerned about more vunerable neighbours that may be fooled by these claims.
Please can you send a warning through the Home Watch system to alert other members.
Thanks
Stuart Munro

and this one.....
Could I report that I had exactly the same. Very credible indeed. I thought he had come to read the meter so I pointed out it was outside so he didn't need to ring the bell. No, no he said I have come about the rate you are paying for your electricity. Your electricity has gone up by 10% since the letter and is going up another 15% in a couple of months and you need to protect yourself against this.
He told me that my supplier had written to me 5 or 6 months ago, offering me a cheaper tariff and I had not replied and signed up so he was visiting to remind me. He asked me if I could find a bill so that he could check. When I produced a bill he checked, of course that I was not on fixed tariff. I pointed out that his badge and logo said Scottish Electricity and my bill was with Southern Electric, don't worry he said, they are parts of the same, if you turn your bill over you will see Scottish Electricity on the back; I did and it was, so I believed him.
It was not until he was well inside the house and through the process that I realised he was changing my supplier, when he asked for my bank details I became suspicious.
Don't do any deal with people who are on your doorstep. If you want to change supplier it is easy to do it on line or by telephone.

A young male was arrested in relation to the recent series of burglaries in our area. He has subsequently been charged with two burglaries and remanded in custody.
However, please do not become complacent where your home security is concerned. Remember to close and lock all windows and doors when not at home, and close windows where access is possible from a flat roof.

'Dodgy' Cash Machines
In recent weeks and months there have been reports of persons tampering with cash machines at the Co-op in Corfe Mullen and with other machines on the Broadway in Broadstone.
The persons trying these thefts have either been attaching devices to the front of the machine to scan your card and try to get your details for their own improper use, or they have attached a false front to the machine which will 'catch' any money as it issued.
Anyone who intends using any cash machine is advised to inspect the machine closely before you decide to use it. Try to move any part on the front of the machine, give a slight pull with your finger nail at an edge of any slot. If there is movement in the machine facing ...DO NOT USE IT!
Immediately report any concerns you may have about the integrity of a cash machine to the bank and to Dorset Police on 01202 222222

Doubtful Driveways Repair Company
A flyer for driveways work has been handed to police in circumstances of concern.
The company are called 'Forest Drives' and the legitimacy of this company cannot be confirmed, however I would draw your attention to the head office address, 115 Victoria Rd, Ferndown- this is in fact, Barclays Bank! The postcode relates to an entirely different address in Ferndown. Both telephone numbers are messaging services.
Advertising using false information in this way is a criminal offence and, by association, brings into question the credentials of the company.

False Communication from HM Revenue & Customs
Quaterly Tax Refund Notification
Please ignore any communication from HM Revenue & Customs which asks for you to submit details to receive a Tax rebate
This is a scam which would only result in your details being used in some form of identity theft or to access your financial accounts.
If in doubt phone your Tax Office.

Scam Busters
Older members of the community appear to be being targeted through telephone calls from a company offering the installation of security systems. The caller may adopt a high pressured and insistent hard sell approach.
The company may even claim to be associated with Dorset Police – this is certainly not the case – or the caller may claim to be from the ‘crime awareness team’.
Members of the public should not feel obliged to pay for services being offered by cold callers. Also, do not agree to a home visit just to end the phone call, as this will only defer the decision of paying for the service – and may make it even more difficult to say no.
A reputable trader will understand the need for customers to think about what they are signing up to and will happily give that time without putting pressure on someone to sign up there and then.
To stop nuisance calls from telephone marketing companies contact the Telephone Preference Service by phoning them on 0845 070 0707 (local call charge) or register online at http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/. For more information and advice on cold calling please visit the Consumer Direct website at http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/ or telephone 08454 04 05 06.
